Our PROJECTs
Marudi
The Marudi Project is a peat swamp forest conservation and restoration initiative aimed at addressing climate change and creating a greener economy for the state of Sarawak. This project, managed by SaraCarbon Sdn Bhd is part of the Samling Group, focuses on generating tradeable carbon credits. Marudi consists of a mix of peat swamp forest and regenerating mixed dipterocarp forest. Located in Sarawak, Malaysia, the peat swamp forests serve as significant carbon sinks, effectively sequestering and storing carbon from the atmosphere through photosynthesis while releasing oxygen back into the environment.

The project encompasses 25,675 hectares, with 21,409 hectares designated for Avoided Planned Deforestation and Degradation (APDD) and 3,806 hectares for Conservation Intact Wetlands (CIW). Notably, 94% of this area consists of peat, encompassing all licensed areas impacted by REDD, CIW, and Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) activities. It is important to note that the project excludes areas currently occupied by community settlements and those used by communities for agricultural purposes, which will continue to be utilized in the future. The forecast for carbon credits generated by the Marudi Project is approximately 1.45 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year over a duration of 30 years.
The conservation and restoration activities in Marudi strictly adhere to the UNFCCC’s REDD+ guidelines, with consistent engagement with local communities being vital to the project’s success.
At the heart of this nature-based solution is the inclusion and support of local communities through the following programs:
- Forest Protection and Enhancement Programme
- Environmental Degradation and Mitigation Programme
- Conservation-based Sustainable Community Livelihoods Development
- Specific activities are continuously being developed for each of these programs in line with REDD+ and Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) guidelines.
By promoting harmonious biodiversity across all forms of flora and fauna and safeguarding the cultures and lifestyles of indigenous communities, SaraCarbon is spearheading Samling’s efforts aligned with Sarawak’s objectives of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to the establishment of a greener economy through tradeable carbon credits.
